Given the deadline for finishing the animation in time to be shown at the Thesis Show, I decided to focus on animating the beginning of the larger story I plotted out in my thumbnail boards.

Rough thumbnails/boards, mapping out the story and camera shots without getting caught up on details.

Violeta/Wioleta's walk cycle.

To get the movement of the skirt and her gait right, I filmed myself walking in a skirt and combat boots for reference. The laces of my own boots are too long and need to be wrapped around the ankle to avoid tripping, and I incorporated this detail into Violeta's boots to reflect her inexperience as a witch (having big shoes to fill) and her cautious personality.

Forest Background.

Inspired by the flat color backgrounds of classic Polish cartoons like Bolek i Lolek, and missing the texture of the pencil and charcoal brushes I typically use in Procreate, I digitally painted this background to be used with the walk cycle.

Cartwheeling Scraggle.

Scraggle gets bored while taking a stroll through the forest and gets too distracted doing cartwheels and handstands to notice that the Great Witch is up to no good. He's not the best look out.

I watched videos of people doing cartwheels on YouTube for reference on the key poses, then added more in-betweens wherever needed, and added some wobbly hesitation as he reaches the fully upside down position to add a feeling of weight to him.

Rough passes at lip syncing.
Before my voice actors got their recordings to me, I used recordings of myself reciting the characters' lines to get a head start on the sequences that would need lip syncing. I also shifted the frames up and down according to the up and down poses of Scraggle's walk cycle. Afterwards came inbetweening, clean up, color, backgrounds, and timing my actors' recordings to my animations.

Inbetweening, fixing the lip sync, & clean up
My professor suggested adding more inbetweens and adding a few frames of Scraggle coming to a stop to make a nicer, less abrupt transition into the next sequence (the cartwheel).

I used the first frame I colored to make the background suit the camera angle and to make sure that the colors of the characters looked nice together with those of the background.

Once I got the recordings from my voice actors, I was able to make more progress on the project and get a better sense of what the finished short would look and sound like.
